My sister-in-law Kacy, or my baby sister as I like to call her, and I have had a special bond over the last few years. We are both the baby in our families and we both lost our fathers at a similar age. She is also out of all of Jason's siblings, the most like Jason in personality. I love her so much I am willing to take a break from all the baby posts to post about her.
She is down in AZ for the summer on a break from BYU. She came to work and earn money and to have surgery. She has been at the Anthem Denny's working as much as they let her. She has also been a great help to me with the baby and it's been nice to have her around as Tyler loves to play with Aunt Kacy.
Kacy has had a summer of bad and good news. I'll start with the bad.
It's about the surgery Kacy needs. The bones in her feet are not properly aligned; some of the bones are broken and are fragmenting/splintering into her tissues; and they are fusing together in this mis-aligned setup. Her muscles are pulled out of proportion because of the breaks and misalignment, which causes her legs, knees, and hips to hurt and will, with time, pull them out of their proper joints.
When she sits, she feels no pain. After sitting for a long time, she cannot put any weight on her feet, for the pain of the misalignment. When she walks(this doesn't fit well with being a waitress), her feet hurt more and more with each step. When she goes running, her feet go numb.
What she needs done is an evans calcaneal opening wedge (which will put her inside ankle back up to the proper level instead of on the ground), an STF implant (to align her feet properly), an excision of talar coalition (to remove the excess or loose bony fragments and improper fusion), and possibly bony fusion of broken bones.
Sadly Kacy's insurance will not pay for surgery because it is congenital defect. She has started the process of many surgeries where each will cost thousands of dollars. We have a local charity to help us, but the money is sadly short. Donations to her account stopped a year ago. Insurable or not, Kacy's feet need to be fixed now - rather than after it's too late. Kacy is doing the next surgery in a week, and will be wiping out everything she has to pay for it. However she will still owe more than a couple of thousand. This is also hard because she is putting herself through school.
Her feet caused Kacy to give up her goal to be in the military as they will not accept her in her condition. That was a very heartbreaking as it was part of her career goal. It isn't easy to give up a dream and get a new one, but Kacy did. This leads to the good news. We found out last week she got into the accounting program at BYU.
She was at my home when she got the message. Kacy is normally a quiet calm girl., however when she got the message she was screaming my name so high pitched, I thought someone else was in my house. I have never seen her so animated. Today she still had a huge grin on her face.
So Congratulations Kacy! We pray school, the surgery, and the money will work out.
